Custom Entry Way Transom:

House before mirror install
Elsewhere in my website is a photo of a client who wanted to create the sensation that she had “transom” windows over her doorways inside her house. She came up with the idea that if she installed mirrors instead windows it would create a very unusual effect. Indeed, it has been quite the topic of conversation during parties. In spring 2010, she asked if I could a similar thing over the entry way door!!! This is a picture of the door prior to beginning work.
Arch during mirror install

I had to locate a custom millwork vendor that would match the interior casing, and have it done within the parameters of the curve radius created by the arch. Then I had to find a mirror vendor who could cut the mirror to my exact specs. Finally, the mirror had to withstand a wide range of temperatures.

Mirror After

Once installed, the client wanted a “starburst” effect. So we used AZEC to create ½” strips, and installed them evenly throughout the half-moon. The polyurethane custom woodwork took latex paint with no primer and after a second coat, we were good to go and the client was very pleased.

Outdoor Buffet

Construction began with the basic structure consisting of 4/4 Spanish Cedar.  The original design had the legs too small for the weight to be safely distributed.  So we turned the legs into 4", 4-sided columns, reinforced for loose tenon joinery.  The face frame was set into the  structure so the client could get a feel for the proportions.
Once the enclosure was painted, drawers and shelves were added.  With stain applied, another picture was taken to check colors and proportions.  Initially, we attempted to match colors to stain, but it was unsuccessful, and the color was then applied as an accent to the stain.  Doors and drawers were all custom made to size for this project.
Prior to spar varnish being applied, the slate tile selected by the client was put on for final approval.  The design allows the client to change the tile at will, or to insert plywood for special occasions.  The intent was to avoid the cold/heat/cold/heat cycle that would surely cause the grout to crack over time, should the tile be applied in the traditional fashion, using cement and grout.
The weather had been dry all summer, but when delivering the buffet, it rained! almost to punctuate the waterproof nature of the piece.  Wheels were added, along with the trim around the top, all made and milled from the Spanish Cedar.  Hand pulls for the doors were on order and to be installed once received.  The top was designed to allow the water through so it would not pool under the tile.
The pulls arrived, (hand rubbed solid brass) and the piece was complete.  Designed for outdoor service, it will provide years of joy for the family as they enjoy their deck and backyard pool.
This gate was commissioned to look nice, be light enough for the owner to move it, and yet strong enough so her clients, (boarding dogs!!) could not tear or wreck it. It's made of Spanish cedar covered with Spar varnish, and specially made animal resistant screen.
